UCAT (UKCAT) Entrance test for Dentistry

What is the UCAT (UKCAT) test?

The UCAT (formerly known as UKCAT) is a computer-based test used for admission into medical and dental schools in the United Kingdom. The test assesses cognitive abilities, such as critical thinking, decision making, and problem solving, as well as non-cognitive abilities, such as empathy and communication skills.

How is the UCAT different from the BMAT and GAMSAT?

The UCAT assesses cognitive and non-cognitive abilities, whereas the BMAT (BioMedical Admissions Test) and GAMSAT (Graduate Medical School Admissions Test) are more focused on academic knowledge and skills. The BMAT assesses skills in scientific knowledge, mathematical ability, and critical thinking, while the GAMSAT assesses skills in reasoning, problem-solving, and written communication.

Why take the UCAT?

The UCAT is required for admission into many medical and dental schools in the United Kingdom and Australia. The test is used to assess a candidate’s cognitive and non-cognitive abilities and helps universities to identify candidates with the potential to succeed in medical and dental programs.

What is being tested in the UCAT?

The UCAT tests five cognitive abilities: verbal reasoning, decision making, quantitative reasoning, abstract reasoning, and situational judgement. In addition, the test also assesses non-cognitive abilities such as communication, teamwork, and empathy.

How do I prepare for the UCAT?

There are various ways to prepare for the UCAT, such as using UCAT preparation books, online resources, or taking UCAT preparation courses. It is also recommended to practice with UCAT sample questions and to take timed practice tests to familiarize yourself with the format and time constraints of the test. Additionally, it’s important to manage your time effectively during the test and to focus on your strengths while also identifying and addressing areas where you may need improvement.

When is UCAT in 2023?

The UCAT test dates for 2023 have not yet been released by the UCAT Consortium. However, typically the UCAT test takes place between July and October each year.

How much does the UCAT cost?

The cost of the UCAT varies depending on the region and level of education. For the UCAT in the United Kingdom, the cost for the 2022 test was £29 for students in the UK or EU, and £49 for students outside the EU.

Can I get a UCAT bursary/discount?

Yes, the UCAT Consortium offers bursaries for students who meet certain eligibility criteria, such as being in financial need or coming from a disadvantaged background. The UCAT Consortium also offers discounts for students who are eligible for free school meals, as well as a limited number of fee waivers.

How is the UCAT graded?

(UCAT deciles 2022) The UCAT is not graded using a traditional scoring system, but rather, scores are given in each of the five subtests and are reported as scaled scores, with a range of 300 to 900. The UCAT score is also presented as a percentile rank, which shows how well a candidate performed compared to other UCAT test-takers. The UCAT deciles are a way of dividing UCAT scores into 10 equal groups, with the top 10% of scores being in the 10th decile, and the lowest 10% of scores being in the 1st decile.

What is a good score on the UCAT test?

A good score on the UCAT test depends on the specific program and university you are applying to, as each program may have different score requirements. However, typically a score in the top deciles (8th to 10th) is considered competitive and can increase your chances of being invited to interview.

How do universities use UCAT scores?

Universities may use UCAT scores differently depending on their admission policies, but typically UCAT scores are used to help select candidates for interview and/or offer. UCAT scores may also be used in combination with other admission criteria, such as academic performance and personal statement.

How can you get into dental school without the UCAT?

In the United Kingdom, the UCAT is a common requirement for admission into dental school, but there may be some programs that do not require the UCAT. In addition, some international programs may have different admission requirements. It’s important to research the specific admission requirements for the dental programs you are interested in to determine if the UCAT is required.
